Family members of three men arrested in the rape and murder of an 11-year-old girl in Baruipur have given conflicting statements about their involvement.
Sandhya Mondal, mother of arrested suspect Prabhash Mondol, said her son should be hanged if involved. She noted he had recently made bad friends.
Dibakar Sardar’s mother, Madhubala Sardar, claimed police arrested the wrong man and that her son was at home on Saturday night. Neighbours said the family of the third accused, Ananda Sardar, fled after their house was attacked.
West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari visited the area on July 7 and gave police a 72-hour deadline to check for negligence. Three suspects remain in custody under BNS and POCSO sections.
