Motorcycle boom calls for stronger road safety culture in Mexico

More than 9 million motorcycles are now circulating in Mexico, driven by delivery platforms and affordable mobility options. Experts urge prioritizing training and certified protective gear to cut accidents.

The growth of the motorcycle fleet has transformed urban mobility across the country. Antonio Rosas, road safety culture manager at GS Motos, said sales must be paired with training for responsible riders.

GS Motos runs the only driving academy owned by a motorcycle seller in Mexico. It has trained more than 100,000 motorcyclists over the past decade, with 25,000 now formed each year.

Rosas noted that road safety education vanished from school programs years ago. The company also runs programs for children aged six to twelve.

According to AMFIM, a DOT-certified helmet cuts death risk by over 40 percent and serious head injury risk by nearly 70 percent. Full gear includes gloves, jacket, pants and boots, with urban options starting at 2,500 pesos.
