North Korean leader Kim Jong-un has sent a congratulatory message to Lao President Thongloun Sisoulith on his reelection as head of the ruling party. The gesture reaffirms the commitment to strengthen bilateral ties. It recalls their summit in Pyongyang last year and pledges expanded cooperation.

North Korean leader Kim Jong-un sent a congratulatory message to Lao President Thongloun Sisoulith on January 8 regarding his reelection as general secretary of the Lao People's Revolutionary Party's central committee. According to the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA), this came on the same day the party congress concluded with his reelection.

Kim described the reelection as an expression of the Lao ruling party members' and people's "high trust and expectation" toward Sisoulith. He pledged to expand cooperation between the two countries, recalling their summit talks in Pyongyang last year.

"I express confidence that the friendly, cooperative relations between our parties and countries, which have a long history and tradition, will further strengthen and advance across all sectors in the spirit of our agreement during our meeting in October last year in Pyongyang," Kim was quoted as saying.

The summit occurred on October 7, 2025, in Pyongyang to mark the 80th founding anniversary of North Korea's ruling party, where they agreed to bolster bilateral cooperation.

Meanwhile, Sisoulith replied last month to Kim's earlier message congratulating Laos on its 50th establishment anniversary. In his December 31 message, he called their October talks "an important landmark in deepening and widening the friendly ties between the two countries."

"I am firmly confident that the friendship and close cooperation (between North Korea and Laos) will bring practical benefits to the peoples of the two countries and contribute to peace, stability, cooperation and development in the world," the Lao leader was quoted as saying.

These exchanges signal ongoing efforts to develop the traditional friendly relations between North Korea and Laos.

The foreign minister of Laos has arrived in Pyongyang, North Korea's state media reported on Wednesday, about a month after the leaders of the two countries held summit talks in October. The visit is likely to discuss follow-up measures to the bilateral cooperation agreed upon during those talks.

This week, North Korea reported several domestic developments, including leader Kim Jong-un's inspection of tactical weapons production and the groundbreaking for a memorial to soldiers killed in Ukraine. State media also criticized Japan's defense budget and highlighted rural achievements ahead of a key party congress. Kim sent messages of support to Russia's Putin and congratulations to Laos' leader.

Chinese President Xi Jinping and South Korean President Lee Jae Myung met in Beijing on January 6, pledging to boost trade and safeguard regional stability. The summit occurred amid North Korea's recent ballistic missile tests and escalating tensions between China and Japan over Taiwan. Both leaders emphasized historical cooperation and the need to uphold peace in Northeast Asia.

South Korean President Lee Jae Myung met with French President Emmanuel Macron on the sidelines of the G20 summit in Johannesburg, South Africa. Lee expressed hope to elevate bilateral ties to a strategic partnership and deepen cooperation in culture, security, and technologies. The meeting followed their encounter at the G7 summit in Canada in June, ahead of the 140th anniversary of diplomatic relations next year.

North Korean leader Kim Jong-un paid his highest tribute to his late father and former leader Kim Jong-il at the family mausoleum on Wednesday, marking the 14th anniversary of his death. Accompanied by government and party officials, Kim visited the Kumsusan Palace of the Sun in Pyongyang at midnight and prayed for his immortality. This annual ritual has been observed every year except in 2022.

President Lee Jae Myung vowed on November 1 at the APEC summit closing ceremony in Gyeongju to continue preemptive measures to ease military tensions and build trust with North Korea. He stressed that peace on the Korean Peninsula is essential for stability and prosperity in the Asia-Pacific region, seeking support from APEC members. He views North Korea's hostile rhetoric as a natural part of change, keeping dialogue open.
