North West municipalities prioritised for support under growth strategy

North West Premier Lazarus Mokgosi has prioritised municipalities in the province, including Ditsobotla Local Municipality, for support through the Provincial Growth and Development Strategy. The strategy aims to create conditions for investment, business growth and job creation by improving basic services such as water, electricity and road maintenance. It has already assisted Ditsobotla, which is under administration.

Premier Mokgosi stated that the strategy has helped incubate Ditsobotla Local Municipality after it was placed under administration for recovery.

He outlined specific interventions, saying: “I pronounced that the Department of Public Works will be re infancing funds. We will get into Ditsobotla to assist with maintenance of road. We have also collaborated and included the farming communities who are saying we are prepared to come and work with government. The North West Koporassie also has come in and said we also want to become part of what you are doing. The Department of Economics Development will also be assisting with solid waste management in Ditsobotla.”

Professor Theo Venter, chairperson of the Provincial Growth and Development Strategy, highlighted Ditsobotla's economic potential. He noted: “The town should be a growth town compared to Rustenburg or Matlosana or JB Marks, but it is not happening. It is the area in the country with the highest yield of maize per hectares in the country. Secondly the highest yield of cattle per hectare in the country and thirdly they got five to seven cement factories, but the town is not working.”

The latest BLSA Reform Tracker shows South Africa’s economic reforms reaching a 71.75% completion index, up 27% since March 2024, but quarterly progress has slowed and municipal dysfunction persists. Cooperative Governance Minister Velenkosini Hlabisa stated that local government failures are the main barrier to growth. National initiatives like Operation Vulindlela continue, yet execution at street level lags.

The sudden resignation of Ekurhuleni's finance committee member Jongizizwe Dlabathi has left the municipality's R51-billion budget in limbo, just weeks before it was due to be tabled. The move follows Mayor Nkosindiphile Xhakaza's recent reshuffle that reduced the EFF's positions and prompted their withdrawal from the coalition. This has plunged the metro into deeper political uncertainty.

This comment, made at the News24 On the Record Summit, is seen as an indication of national ANC intervention in regional candidate selection.
