North West police combat illegal mining in Kroondal

Police in South Africa's North West province have launched an operation against illegal mining activities spreading to the Kroondal area near Rustenburg. Several arrests were made in the neighboring Bapong village, while authorities seized mining equipment in Kroondal.

In a bid to curb the growing threat of illegal mining, police in the North West province initiated a multi-disciplinary operation targeting activities in Kroondal, an area adjacent to the Bapong village. Bapong has long suffered from illegal backyard chrome mining, prompting recent arrests there following the deployment of specialized teams.

Upon reaching the Kroondal site, officers found that the miners had fled, leaving behind valuable equipment. No arrests occurred on site due to challenging weather and terrain conditions, but police confiscated excavators, TLBs, heavy machinery, and trucks. Authorities emphasized their ongoing efforts to identify and apprehend the key figures orchestrating these operations.

General Ryno Naidoo, the Acting North West Police Commissioner, described the scene: “On our arrival obviously, the illegal miners have abandoned site and disappeared, and due to the weather and the area and surrounding, we did not intend to pursue them because we know we will find them. But, however, we have seized various machineries that consist of TLB and heavy machineries as well as trucks.”

This operation highlights the persistent challenge of illegal mining in the region, which disrupts communities and economies while posing safety risks.

Search efforts continue for missing individuals amid ongoing rescue operations.

The tragic events at an abandoned gold mine in Stilfontein last year exposed serious flaws in South Africa's policing operations. Over 90 illegal miners died during a rescue effort, amid a campaign that blocked supplies and entrances. An inquiry revealed failures to gather and act on critical information about those trapped underground.

Indonesia's Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) has halted the investigation into an alleged nickel mining permit corruption case in Konawe Utara involving former Regent Aswad Sulaiman, with estimated state losses of Rp 2.7 trillion. Former KPK leader Saut Situmorang explained the 2017 suspect designation process, starting from public complaints and backed by State Audit Agency (BPK) calculations. The halt stems from BPK's inability to compute state financial losses.
