The National Prosecuting Authority has withdrawn fraud and corruption charges against Lieutenant General Dumisani Khumalo, Brigadier Dineo Mokwele and five other co-accused. The decision followed representations by the accused and a review by the National Director of Public Prosecutions.
The withdrawal was announced on 27 July 2026 after former Investigating Directorate Against Corruption head Andrea Johnson testified at the Madlanga Commission. Johnson admitted serious flaws in the process that led to the arrests, which took place in June 2025 over the April 2024 appointment of Mokwele to lead the Technical Support Services division.
NPA spokesperson Kaizer Kganyago confirmed that the charges were withdrawn before plea in the Brooklyn Police Station case. The National Director of Public Prosecutions Advocate Andy Mothibi directed the move, stating that the matter may not be re-enrolled without his express written approval once the investigation is finalised.
Mokwele expressed disappointment at the provisional withdrawal. Johnson vacated her post on the same day after President Cyril Ramaphosa agreed to waive her three-month notice period. Her evidence at the commission is scheduled to resume on 3 August 2026.
