Darien Hobley, a 22-year-old from Ohio, has been sentenced to between eight and ten and a half years in prison after pleading guilty to involuntary manslaughter in the fatal shooting of his 20-year-old girlfriend, Riley Jones. The incident occurred in August 2025 in the parking lot of an AutoZone store in Bedford. Hobley expressed remorse in court, stating he did not intend to harm her.

According to surveillance footage described in court, Jones blocked Hobley's car, exited her vehicle appearing upset, and approached his driver's side door. She opened the door and leaned inside, at which point Hobley fired a single shot that struck her in the chest.
Jones was transported to a hospital but was pronounced dead from the wound. A witness who called 911 reported seeing Hobley standing over Jones with the gun after the shooting. Hobley, 22, later told investigators that Jones had reached for his gun, causing him to become scared. He admitted to pleading guilty on February 2 to involuntary manslaughter and tampering with evidence.
During his sentencing hearing on February 24 before Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Court Judge Hollie Gallagher, Hobley addressed the court, saying he "didn't want to hurt her" and apologizing to Jones' family. He explained his actions afterward, stating, "I tried to help, but I didn't know what to do. And everything was so overwhelming. I just walked away. I just needed a new scenery."
Judge Gallagher described the case as "a really tragic, tragic case. It's just awful," adding, "This is why people Mr. Hobley's age shouldn't have a weapon. They are not operating on all cylinders yet." Hobley received a sentence of eight to ten and a half years in prison, followed by two years of parole upon release.
