OpenAI updates Codex macOS app with background computing, browser, and 90+ plugins

Two months after launching its Codex macOS app, OpenAI has released a major update introducing background computer use, an in-app browser, and over 90 new plugins. The enhancements build toward a 'super app' foundation, with engineering lead Thibault Sottiaux calling it the first open phase of that evolution.

OpenAI rolled out version updates for its Codex macOS desktop app on April 16, expanding on the multi-agent capabilities introduced in February. The app can now operate in the background, accessing all user apps via its own cursor for seeing, clicking, and typing—enabling parallel agents on Macs without interrupting workflows. This is ideal for developers testing frontend changes, app iteration, or API-less tools, per OpenAI's blog post.

New scheduling lets tasks run hours, days, or weeks later, with the app waking as needed. An in-app web browser supports previewing, commenting, and image generation via gpt-image-1.5. Additional features include multi-terminal tabs, GitHub review actions, improved memory, repetitive task automations ('heartbeats'), message scanning, and daily briefings for deeper workflow integration.

Over 90 plugins were added, covering Atlassian Rovo, CircleCI, CodeRabbit, GitLab Issues, Microsoft Suite, Neon by Databricks, Slack, Notion, and Google apps—shifting focus to non-coding tasks. With 3 million weekly users (nearly half non-coders), Codex is evolving into a daily tool. Thibault Sottiaux told reporters: “We’re actually doing the sneaky thing where we’re building the super app out in the open and evolving it out of Codex.”

OpenAI is developing a desktop superapp that merges its ChatGPT chatbot, Codex coding platform and Atlas browser to improve user experience. The initiative, led by applications CEO Fidji Simo, aims to simplify efforts amid a focus on core products. This follows recent announcements of smaller GPT-5.4 models.

OpenAI has released a dedicated macOS application for its Codex AI coding tool, enhancing its capabilities to manage multiple AI agents for complex tasks. The app builds on Codex, which debuted last spring as a response to competitors like Anthropic's Claude Code. It introduces features like Skills and Automations to streamline workflows for developers.

Building on its Codex macOS app launched last month, OpenAI has introduced plugin support, enabling one-click integrations with services like GitHub and Gmail. The feature bundles skills, app connections, and Model Context Protocol (MCP) servers to simplify and replicate tasks across organizations.

Peter Wilson, a Mozilla developer, has launched cq, a project he calls 'Stack Overflow for agents,' to address key limitations in AI coding tools. The initiative aims to provide up-to-date knowledge sharing among agents, reducing redundant problem-solving. It is available now as a proof-of-concept plugin.

Cursor announced the launch of Cursor 3 on Thursday, a new product interface that enables users to create AI coding agents for task completion. Developed under the code name Glass, the tool positions the AI coding startup to challenge competitors. It responds directly to recent successes by Anthropic’s Claude Code and OpenAI’s Codex.

Anthropic's Claude AI app has hit the top spot on Apple's App Store free apps chart, overtaking ChatGPT and Gemini, fueled by public support following President Trump's federal ban on the tool over Anthropic's AI safety refusals.

Apple has enforced App Store guidelines that prohibit apps from executing unreviewed code, leading to the removal of one vibe coding app and blocks on updates for two others in recent weeks. The affected apps include Anything, which was recently removed, and Replit and Vibecode, which faced issues in March. Apple states the rules protect user privacy and security.
