Oregon man sentenced after kidnapping attempt sparked police shooting

John "Dakota" Lyon, 27, pleaded guilty Thursday to charges stemming from a January incident in which he held his brother at knifepoint, prompting a police response that left the younger sibling wounded.

Lyon received a sentence of six years and five months in prison along with two years of community supervision. The charges included attempted kidnapping in the second degree, unlawful use of a weapon, and coercion.

The events unfolded on Jan. 6 at the family home in North Albany. Lyon accused his 21-year-old brother Maverick of conspiring against him and pulled him through the house while holding a kitchen knife. Their father alerted police via the home surveillance system.

Maverick eventually broke free and exited the back door still holding a knife. Officers, mistaking him for the threat, fired multiple shots and struck him several times. Maverick told responders, "You shot the wrong guy."

Prosecutors noted that methamphetamine may have influenced Dakota Lyon's actions, citing a positive urine test and reports of recent use. His attorney stated that Lyon expressed remorse and wished he could have taken the bullets instead.
