Blizzard's head of development for live games addressed fan concerns over China-only content in Overwatch. Walter Kong confirmed that exclusive events stem from the partnership with NetEase. The comments come during the game's 10-year anniversary celebrations.

Walter Kong, head of development for Blizzard’s live games and mobile division, spoke to IGN about the ongoing China-exclusive events and cosmetics in Overwatch. He tied these offerings directly to the publishing agreement with NetEase that resumed in 2024 after a split in 2022. Kong noted that NetEase handles publishing in China and designs market-specific activities to make players feel cared for in that region.

Overwatch in China is operated by NetEase under a separate publishing agreement. Because of that, China can have different skins, rewards and events than the rest of the world. You can complain to Blizzard all you want, but these decisions are largely up to NetEase, not Blizzard.

One of the benefits netease got when they got blizzard games back to china was that they can have exclusive collabs without blizzard really interfering-

bc they already had events where they got everything they missed right after overwatch came back to them. Plus now china has been getting exclusive skins and rewards as well. None of this is because they didnt have overwatch , it’s because netease operates overwatch china.

there have been china exclusive skins- its part of the deal blizzard made to allow china exclusive skins when they brought overwatch back to china because it was unavailable on chinese servers for a while

Well its not blizzards choice. Netease publishes all the exclusive stuff in China since they have control over overwatch in their country. Everyone acts like its life or death that we miss a few skins and some namecards
