Pentagon freezes permits for 155 onshore wind projects

The Pentagon has halted permitting for at least 155 onshore wind projects across 24 states for nearly a year, citing risks from drones interfering with military radar. Developers report $2 billion in added costs and missed deadlines for federal tax credits.

The freeze affects projects with a combined capacity of 44 gigawatts. Wind developers must submit proposals for review, but the Pentagon has not resumed approvals or set a timeline for doing so.

A coalition of renewable energy groups sued the Department of Defense in May, arguing the pause violates transparency rules and threatens project viability. Fifty-five Democratic lawmakers also requested a briefing from the Pentagon that month, but no response has been issued.

The Pentagon maintains the delay protects national security from emerging drone threats. Industry consultant Dave Belote called the move politically motivated and lacking required public process.

Communities across the United States blocked or delayed at least 75 data center projects worth about 130 billion dollars from January through March 2026. Researchers described the period as the most blocked and delayed on record since tracking began in 2023. The opposition reflects a structural shift in local resistance to such developments.

Unionized workers in the renewable energy sector are speaking out against the Trump administration's efforts to halt wind projects, citing threats to their jobs and livelihoods.

Seven northeastern US states led by Democrats sued on Tuesday a financial agreement between TotalEnergies and the US government. The deal provides for reimbursement of nearly one billion dollars to the French group in exchange for abandoning offshore wind projects.

Otoe County officials voted last month to suspend permits for new data centers for as long as one year. The move follows resident concerns about water use, electricity costs, and potential heat impacts from the facilities.

The Environmental Protection Agency held a public hearing on Wednesday to discuss a proposed rule that would give states more control over public input in permitting processes for minor sources of air pollution, including facilities that power data centers.
