Political parties propose stronger coordination among law enforcement agencies

Parliament’s ad hoc committee received submissions on Wednesday from the ANC, MK Party and EFF calling for improved cooperation between SAPS, its Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation, IPID, IDAC and the NPA.

The proposals form part of the committee’s preliminary report on allegations that organised crime networks have infiltrated law enforcement. Parties also urged an assessment of ongoing disputes between the agencies and their effect on investigations.

The submissions follow recent tensions after IDAC attempted to arrest Crime Intelligence head Lieutenant-General Dumisani Khumalo and senior officer Major-General Nosipho Madondo. KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Lieutenant-General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi warned publicly that SAPS was “facing a war” and that “there are many players in this game”.

Committee members will examine the revised draft during two days of deliberations scheduled for 30 June and 1 July. The inquiry stems from accusations first made by Mkhwanazi in July 2025 regarding a drug cartel known as the Big Five.

South Africa's National Assembly Speaker Thoko Didiza has begun the process of forming a 31-member impeachment committee to examine allegations against President Cyril Ramaphosa over foreign currency found at his Phala Phala farm. The move follows a Constitutional Court ruling last Friday that declared a parliamentary rule unconstitutional and required the committee's establishment. Political parties must submit names for the committee by 22 May 2026.

A parliamentary ad hoc committee has concluded that witness testimony reveals a serious institutional crisis in South Africa’s law enforcement agencies. The findings follow months of hearings into allegations of drug cartel infiltration.
