IPUSA calls for calm amid SAPS and IDAC tensions

The Independent Policing Union of South Africa has urged calm amid growing tensions between the South African Police Service and the Investigating Directorate Against Corruption.

The union warned that the public standoff undermines the rule of law and erodes public trust. It linked the dispute to high-profile arrests and warrants involving senior police officials.

General Secretary Mpho Kwinika stated that differences should be addressed through proper channels. He noted the standoff directly affects members on the ground.

Kwinika recalled tensions in 2009 between the Scorpions and SAPS that led to the Scorpions' closure. He stressed that the current conflict must not result in IDAC being shut down, given the sophisticated nature of crime in the country.

A march to deliver demands to the mayor's office in KuGompo (formerly East London) turned violent on Monday, with cars torched, shops looted, and foreign nationals targeted. Eastern Cape Premier Lubabalo Oscar Mabuyane and national government have called for calm after the unrest. Local traditional leaders, including Prince Xhanti Sigcawu, condemned the alleged coronation as a violation of South African sovereignty.

Acting Police Minister Firoz Cachalia has cautioned South African Police Service members to adhere to proper protocols for media communications and reporting misconduct. This follows a briefing by suspended Mpumalanga Police Commissioner Lieutenant-General Daphney Manamela, who accused National Commissioner Fannie Masemola of protecting corrupt officers. Police Ministry spokesperson Kamogelo Mogotsi emphasised efforts to restore public trust.
