The Boston Red Sox have optioned pitcher Brayan Bello to Triple-A Worcester after a difficult start to the season. Chief baseball officer Craig Breslow said the move aims to help Bello regain his enjoyment of the game.
Bello was sent down on Friday following an 0-6 record and 10.35 ERA in eight starts. He had also posted a 16.88 ERA in the first inning of those appearances. Breslow noted that Bello had shown a big personality and love for competing when he first arrived but had put too much pressure on himself. The team encouraged him to fall back in love with baseball and compete in the minors. In four outings as a bulk reliever, Bello posted a strong 0.71 ERA over 25 1/3 innings. The Red Sox went 2-10 in games where he appeared this season. Breslow described the decision as tough but made in Bello’s best interest. He added that Bello took the news professionally and remains confident he can return to the majors.
