Researchers design first quantum grandfather clock

Scientists have created the first complete design for a quantum version of a pendulum clock using a single atom, mirrors and light. The device could advance understanding of timekeeping at the quantum scale.

Matteo Brunelli at Collège de France and colleagues developed a mathematical model that replicates the key elements of a traditional grandfather clock with quantum components. Their design features a cavity formed by two facing mirrors, one of which oscillates, along with an atom that transitions between energy states and emits photons to drive the motion. The atom serves as the escapement mechanism, ensuring stable ticks without external control.

Physicists have published research proposing that a single clock could tick both faster and slower at the same time due to quantum effects. The work combines relativity and quantum mechanics in a novel way. Researchers say advances in atomic clock technology may soon allow the idea to be tested in the lab.

An international team of physicists has found that quantum collapse models, potentially linked to gravity, introduce a minuscule uncertainty in time itself. This sets a fundamental limit on clock precision, though far below current detection levels. The research, published in Physical Review Research, explores ties between quantum mechanics and gravity.

French physicists James Hefford and Matt Wilson have proposed a mathematical model called QBox, outlining a post-quantum layer of reality that could bridge quantum theory and gravity. The theory introduces 'hyperdecoherence,' allowing quantum mechanics to emerge from a deeper realm with indefinite causality. Experts praise the work as a promising step toward quantum gravity.

Researchers have produced an exotic molecule that looks like a butterfly, with electron wings, by combining giant and normal-sized rubidium atoms. The achievement completes a two-decade search for a family of such giant molecules and may enable further advances in quantum science.
