Rocío Jurado is made a saint in a pop pilgrimage in Zamora

Singer Rocío Jurado was the focus of a pop pilgrimage in Zamora on Saturday in which her image was carried on a float and made a saint. The event coincides with the twentieth anniversary of her death, which falls on Monday, June 1.

The event took place as part of the Hurra Pop festival, which each year canonizes a deceased music idol. Previous editions have sanctified figures such as David Bowie, Tino Casal or Raffaella Carrá.

The procession passed through the aceñas de Cabañales along the Duero river under temperatures of up to 34 degrees. Attendees sang songs including Como una ola, Ese hombre and Se nos rompió el amor while cooling off with water guns and holy water sprinklers.

Andrés Cid, the festival coordinator, told EFE that a saint like Rocío deserves it because everyone likes one of her songs. The capacity of one thousand people was filled with visitors from outside Zamora.

María Eugenia Cabezas, Zamora city councilor for culture, noted that in a city like Zamora a pop pilgrimage has special meaning.
