Speaking Wednesday at the Renaissance Club in North Berwick, Scotland, McIlroy praised the Scottish Open as a model for co-sanctioned events that boost fields and facilities.
He noted the event has strengthened since gaining PGA Tour and DP World Tour support, calling it a blueprint for other national opens like the Canadian Open.
McIlroy cautioned that the 2028 structure, with a closed Championship Series of about 20 events, risks undermining the open nature of these tournaments. He urged special treatment to preserve their character.
Scottie Scheffler echoed support for keeping the Scottish Open in the top tier, citing its value as preparation for the Open Championship.
