Rubén Alvarado near exit from Codelco executive presidency

Mining industry sources indicate that Rubén Alvarado's days as executive president of Codelco are numbered. A replacement would be announced in the coming weeks.

More than ten mining executives, former directors and experts agree that Alvarado, 66, will leave the post within a period not exceeding one month. The executive took office in September 2023 after the departure of André Sougarret.

Professor Gustavo Lagos noted that Alvarado is weakened by the El Teniente accident of July 2025, which left six workers dead, and by transparency incidents in December 2025. “Someone has to take responsibility,” he added.

The new board chairman, Bernardo Fontaine, would have advanced in the search for a successor with a mining profile, around 60 years old and knowledge of Codelco. The change aims to send signals of renewal after questions about the company's credibility.

President José Antonio Kast named Bernardo Fontaine as the new chair of Codelco’s board, replacing Máximo Pacheco, effective May 26. The move comes amid government criticism of prior management over production shortfalls and financial performance.

Máximo Pacheco announced his resignation from the Novandino Litio board on Monday, hours before stepping down as Codelco president. In a letter to successor Bernardo Fontaine, Pacheco cited partisan pressures as the reason for his decision.

Máximo Pacheco, outgoing president of Codelco's board, delivered a 45-minute speech on Monday at the ordinary shareholders' meeting, rejecting government criticisms and stating that 'Codelco is not in crisis'. He addressed his successor, Bernardo Fontaine, appointed by President José Antonio Kast, and Mining and Economy Minister Daniel Mas. He insisted that the state-owned company remains 'Chile's best business'.

President José Antonio Kast completed a cabinet adjustment on May 19, the fastest since the return to democracy. The departures included ministers Mara Sedini and Trinidad Steinert. Days later, additional modifications were recorded in the team at the Segundo Piso of La Moneda.

Codelco board chairman Máximo Pacheco said it will unlock greater potential in the mining district.
