Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez will address congress at his own request at the end of June to report on judicial investigations affecting the PSOE. The appearance will follow the European Council meetings on June 18 and 19.
Sánchez has chosen to advance his usual post-European Council appearance to include explanations on recent judicial cases involving party leaders and relatives. These include probes into payments to Leire Díez, actions by former Organization Secretary Santos Cerdán and the indictment of former President José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero in the Plus Ultra case.
The government has denounced an alleged conspiracy to topple the executive with non-democratic methods. Minister Óscar Puente stated that “there are many people in our society who see what is happening” and affirmed they will not yield to attempts to disturb democracy.
Partners such as ERC, Compromís, BNG and Podemos had registered requests for explanations. The appearance aims to address these demands without endangering the coalition's continuity. PSOE Organization Secretary Rebeca Torró denied that the party ordered or sheltered criminal conduct.
