Second victim dies in plane crash in Manaus

Ulisses de Oliveira, an aviation student, died on the afternoon of Saturday (March 21) following the crash of a single-engine plane during training at the Aeroclube do Amazonas in Manaus. Instructor Fernando Lúcio Moreira dos Santos Filho died at the scene.

A single-engine Cessna 152 plane, registration PR-TSM, crashed around 9am on Saturday (March 21) during a 'touch and go' maneuver at Aeródromo de Flores in Manaus. The aircraft lost altitude at about 30 meters and collided near the runway side, overturning in vegetation with the front section and engine destroyed. Instructor Fernando Lúcio Moreira dos Santos Filho, 40, died at the scene. He was experienced, with over 1,500 flight hours, including more than 400 on the involved aircraft, and had worked at the aerodrome for six years as director of the Centro de Instrução de Aviação Civil at the aeroclub. Student Ulisses de Oliveira was rushed in critical condition to Hospital e Pronto-Socorro Dr. João Lúcio in eastern Manaus but succumbed to cranial and thoracic injuries, with death confirmed by the Amazonas Health Secretariat (SES-AM) that afternoon. The Amazonas Military Fire Department (CBMAM) responded at 9:30am with 14 personnel and four vehicles, supported by Military Police, the Medico-Legal Institute (IML), and forensics. The Aeroclube do Amazonas stated that the aircraft, pilot, and student had up-to-date documentation and that it is assisting the families. The causes are under investigation by the Centro de Investigação e Prevenção de Acidentes Aeronáuticos (Cenipa) of the Brazilian Air Force.
