Security tightened ahead of SADC ministers meeting at Kruger

South African authorities have increased security at Kruger National Park ahead of a SADC Foreign Ministers retreat scheduled to discuss regional policy and geopolitics.

Security has been tightened in and around Kruger National Park in Mpumalanga. The South African Police Service K9 Unit is sweeping the Nombolo Mdhluli Conference Centre. Mpumalanga traffic officials are patrolling nearby roads.

The SADC retreat was agreed at the Council of Ministers Meeting in Pretoria in March. Minister Ronald Lamola is expected to open the session in his role as Chairperson of the SADC Council of Ministers.

Ministers will reflect on the geopolitical environment and its regional impact. Discussions will also cover free movement of people, goods and services across the region. The gathering follows illegal immigration protests in Durban.
