Malawi raises concern with Lamola over attacks on foreign nationals

Malawi has raised official concerns with South Africa about the safety of its citizens after recent attacks on undocumented foreign nationals in KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng. International Relations Minister Ronald Lamola condemned the violence during a SADC meeting.

Minister Lamola spoke on the sidelines of a SADC Foreign Ministers meeting at Skukuza in Kruger National Park. He said the South African government condemns attacks on foreign nationals and is engaging with Malawi and other countries.

"Yes I am engaging with my counterparts, particularly Malawi … my counterpart from Ghana was also here. But also, some of the SADC Foreign Affairs Ministers have also raised the issue with me. We have assured them that as the South African government we condemn these attacks against foreign nationals," Lamola said.

Lamola noted that it is the government's responsibility to address illegal immigration. The ministers are also discussing the impact of global conflicts, including tensions between Iran and the United States, on the region.
