The Federal Government has reported substantial advances in establishing state police, with a constitutional amendment expected shortly following months of stakeholder consultations.
Chief of Staff to the President Femi Gbajabiamila disclosed the developments on Thursday after a high-level meeting. Deliberations began about three or four months ago on directions from President Bola Tinubu to examine constitutional, legal and operational issues for a decentralised policing system. Gbajabiamila stated that establishing state police requires careful legislative and constitutional procedures. He noted the process has gained traction and expressed optimism that the constitutional amendment would be introduced soon, followed by enabling legislation. The Chief of Staff highlighted broad national consensus on the initiative, which President Tinubu has advocated since last year. He said the president would receive a full briefing on the meeting outcomes.
