The purchase could expand to about 2,000 units, representing tens of millions in spending—between $80 million and $160 million at the base price of $79,990 per vehicle. Tesla confirmed in November that Cybertrucks are already in use at SpaceX facilities, with hundreds now visible in lots in southern Texas.
Tesla launched Cybertruck deliveries in November 2023, following a 2019 unveiling where Musk promised a base model starting at $40,000 and a premium version at $70,000. However, actual pricing began at $79,990 for the base and $114,990 for the Cyberbeast, contributing to subdued demand. Despite over 1 million reservations, only about 60,000 have converted to orders in over two years of production. Tesla planned for 250,000 annual units at Gigafactory Texas but estimates suggest sales below 20,000 per year—less than 10% of capacity—based on registration data bundled with Model S and X figures. In 2024, combined sales of these premium models totaled 85,133 units.
The deal highlights collaboration among Musk's companies, including SpaceX's $2 billion investment in xAI. It comes as Tesla faces delivery risks for 2025, with 1.22 million vehicles delivered through September and a need for 568,917 in the fourth quarter to avoid a second consecutive annual decline. The news boosted Tesla's stock by around 4-5%, reaching $487.21 to $490.32 amid broader market volatility.
