Spain ends first heatwave but high temperatures persist in several areas

Spain has officially ended its first heatwave of the season, though temperatures will remain high in the northeast, Mediterranean and Balearic Islands this Friday.

The State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) has lifted the special warning for the entire country. Spokesman Rubén del Campo stated that “the heatwave episode will be considered over although it must be taken into account that in the Mediterranean and Balearic Islands there will be no major changes in temperatures”.

Highs will reach between 34 and 36 degrees in the northeast and may hit 36-38 degrees in the Ebro valley. Warnings have been issued in five regions: Navarra, Aragón, Baleares, Catalunya and La Rioja.

An analysis by World Weather Attribution concluded that these temperatures “would have been practically impossible” without climate change. Researcher Theodore Keeping said that “fossil fuel emissions are directly responsible” for current conditions.
