Nicolás Álvarez Varona has completed the first stage of double hip surgery in Valencia. The 25-year-old ATP player aims to resolve long-standing injuries that have limited his play since 2025.
The Spanish player retired from the Bratislava Challenger in early July after trailing 3-4 in the opening set against Hynek Barton. Medical tests confirmed bone malformations in his femur and hip, leading specialists to recommend the procedure.
Surgery was performed by Dr. Bruno Capurro, head of the Hip and Pelvis Unit at Ribera IMSKE Hospital. Álvarez Varona described the operation as an investment in his career and said he wants to return to competition with his body at full capacity.
Álvarez Varona reached a career-high ranking of world No. 284 and once set records as the youngest Spaniard to earn an ATP point. Recovery is expected to take several months before he can resume training.
