Swedish ice hockey player charged with gross drunk driving

An elite Swedish ice hockey player faces charges of gross drunk driving following a crash in early May. The player has confessed to the offense and will lose driving privileges for two and a half years. The incident occurred after a family argument led the player to drive while intoxicated.

The crash took place near a shopping center when the player lost control of the vehicle. According to police reports the car crossed a refuge, broke through a fence and stopped at a bus stop on the wrong side of the road.

A breath test showed an alcohol level of at least 0.69 milligrams per liter, equivalent to over one promille. The player told investigators the evening had begun with dinner and beer at home before an argument with a partner prompted the decision to drive around.

The player admitted looking at a mobile phone just before the collision. Transportstyrelsen has revoked the license for two and a half years. Charges were filed in early June and the player has acknowledged guilt though sentencing has not yet occurred.

The player has appeared for several prominent Swedish ice hockey clubs.
