Texas prosecutor contradicts ICE account of Lorenzo Salgado death

A federal prosecutor in Texas stated there was no collision between Lorenzo Salgado Araujo's truck and an ICE vehicle before an agent shot him on July 7 in Houston.

Aaron Reitz, federal prosecutor for the Southern District of Texas, detailed that agents were searching for two Guatemalan men and believed Salgado Araujo matched their description. They attempted to stop the truck twice, first with lights and then by surrounding it, but Salgado Araujo made a U-turn to evade them.

According to Reitz, an agent was partially inside or beside the vehicle when Salgado Araujo tried to reverse and move forward. The prosecutor's statement makes no mention of any collision or that the agent feared for his life, unlike an earlier Department of Homeland Security release.

Salgado Araujo, 52 and a 35-year resident of the United States, was traveling with three coworkers including his brother, who remains in ICE custody. Agents reported seeing bags with a white substance resembling crystal, though the brother's lawyer said it was electrolytes.
