Timo Meier has apologized to Oskar Sundqvist following a knee-on-knee hit during the IIHF World Championship quarterfinal between Switzerland and Sweden. The New Jersey forward received a one-game suspension but faced criticism for the play that left Sundqvist unable to leave the ice on his own.
The incident occurred roughly 14 minutes into the second period of the quarterfinal. Meier was initially penalized with two minutes for crosschecking, a call that drew strong reactions as Sundqvist later left the arena in a wheelchair.
