Tinubu expands Nigerian Army to 12 divisions

President Bola Tinubu has approved the expansion of the Nigerian Army from eight to 12 divisions and the recruitment of 28,000 personnel. Former Senate President Ahmad Lawan welcomed the move in a statement issued on Wednesday.

Senator Ahmad Lawan, who chairs the Senate Committee on Defence, described the decision as a strategic step to strengthen Nigeria’s security architecture. He said the additional divisions would reduce response times to threats in ungoverned spaces and help end insurgency.

In the statement, Lawan noted that the asymmetric nature of modern warfare requires superior manpower and operational agility. He added that recruiting 28,000 young Nigerians would create employment while reducing vulnerability to crime and extremism.

Lawan said the reforms support the Renewed Hope Agenda and prayed for the success of the armed forces. The announcement was made in Abuja.
