Following the recent Season 2 trailer, Netflix's live-action Avatar: The Last Airbender introduces Toph Beifong, the blind earthbending prodigy, played by Miya Cech. Debuting in 2026, this adaptation humanizes the fan-favorite while honoring her iconic traits from the original series.
Introduced in the animated series' second season, episode 'The Blind Bandit,' Toph disguises herself as the Earth Rumble VI champion to escape her overprotective parents. She joins Aang, Katara, and Sokka, teaching Aang earthbending via her seismic sense, which lets her 'see' through ground vibrations for unmatched power and precision.
Voiced by Jessie Flower in the original, Toph's tough, blunt personality won hearts. Originally conceived as male, she innovates metalbending by targeting impurities in metal—a skill that spreads via her academy and persists into The Legend of Korra era. As an adult, she serves as Republic City police chief, raises daughters Lin and Suyin (making her a grandmother to airbender Opal), retreats to the Foggy Swamp, trains Korra, and battles Kuvira.
Miya Cech's portrayal ages Toph slightly and adds femininity for live-action. Cech shared: "My version of Toph is going to be a little older and slightly more feminine... working into a very humanizing space." She consulted Flower for authenticity. The teaser echoes her animated look. Cech also voices adult Toph in the animated film The Legend of Aang: The Last Airbender, out October 9, 2026.
