Trump orders probe of National Academy of Sciences over climate manuals

President Donald Trump directed federal officials to review the National Academy of Sciences after accusing the organization of publishing discredited climate manuals that influenced court decisions. The move targets a taxpayer-funded group that has received hundreds of millions in federal grants. The academy has not commented on the order.

Trump posted on Truth Social that the National Academy of Sciences produced fraudulent manuals on climate change for federal judges. He said these materials led to major legal wins for activists and huge losses for the country.

The president ordered suspension and debarment officials to examine the academy's conduct. He stated that taxpayers should not fund what he called climate fraud and that judges should not rely on it.

The Supreme Court is scheduled to hear arguments this year in a case brought by Boulder, Colorado, against oil companies over greenhouse gas emissions. In 2024 the academy received $84 million from the Department of Transportation, $33 million from the Department of Defense, and $7 million from the Department of Energy.

A federal judge in Boston on Wednesday issued a permanent injunction blocking key parts of President Donald Trump’s executive order that sought, among other changes, to require documentary proof of U.S. citizenship for voter registration using the federal form. The Justice Department is expected to appeal.

A federal judge has ruled that the Trump administration's cancellation of more than $100 million in humanities grants supporting writers, researchers, and scholars was unconstitutional. The decision bars the administration from ending the grants and criticizes its use of artificial intelligence in the process.
