Turner Classic Movies acquires Latino representation documentary

Turner Classic Movies has acquired exclusive rights to the documentary 'Beyond The Border: Latino Representation in Hollywood.' The film, directed by sisters Clara and Julia Kuperberg, will premiere on TCM in September during Hispanic Heritage Month. It explores the century-long fight for Latino visibility in cinema.

Turner Classic Movies announced the acquisition of exclusive rights to 'Beyond The Border: Latino Representation in Hollywood,' a documentary feature directed, written, and produced by Clara and Julia Kuperberg. The film traces a century-long struggle for Latino representation in Hollywood, highlighting how artists reclaimed their images and reshaped cinema. It incorporates archives and film clips to illustrate these efforts. Voices in the documentary include John Leguizamo, casting director Carla Hool, Esai Morales, Jimmy Smits, Edward James Olmos, director Gregory Nava, director Patricia Riggen, and José Zúñiga. The Kuperberg sisters, French filmmakers who have collaborated for over 20 years, described the project as part of their broader exploration of American cinema. 'As French filmmakers, we’ve spent over 20 years exploring American cinema and culture, so in a way, this film is part of a larger journey,' they said. They noted the paradox of Latinos' central role in U.S. history yet limited, stereotyped presence in Hollywood. Through their company Wichita Films, the Kuperbergs have produced more than 60 documentaries, screened at Cannes and by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, and distributed on platforms like HBO Max, Amazon, Hulu, and TCM. Martine Melloul co-produced the film, with Daniel Talbott as executive producer. It was made by TCM Cinema and Wichita Films, in association with Kali Pictures.
