UK regulator launches Microsoft Office bundling probe

The UK's Competition and Markets Authority will start a formal investigation this month into Microsoft's business software practices. Officials aim to assess whether bundling of products like Windows, Word, Excel, Teams and Copilot limits competition.

The probe will examine Microsoft's position in these markets and cloud licensing practices. It seeks to determine if targeted measures are needed to protect choice, innovation and prices for UK users. Hundreds of thousands of residents rely on the company's tools daily, CMA Chief Executive Sarah Cardell said in a statement.

The commission conducted an on-site inspection of the IT giant's Japanese subsidiary in Tokyo the same day. Microsoft stated it will cooperate fully with the probe.

China's Ministry of Commerce announced two trade barrier investigations into US practices on Friday, described as reciprocal countermeasures to Washington's two Section 301 probes against China. The probes target US measures disrupting global supply chains and green product trade, potentially breaching WTO rules and bilateral agreements. They are set to conclude within six months, with a possible three-month extension.
