US requests information on Korean shipbuilders' naval capacity

The United States has asked major South Korean shipbuilders to provide information on their capacity to build naval vessels including destroyers and fleet replenishment ships, industry sources said.

HD Hyundai Heavy Industries Co. and Hanwha Ocean Co. submitted details on their destroyer design capabilities and shipbuilding capacity last month. The three companies, including Samsung Heavy Industries Co., also responded to a separate request on medium-sized naval tankers.

An industry official said the responses provided a comprehensive overview of the shipyards' capabilities including track record, design workforce and annual capacity. The move follows a conversation at last month's G7 summit in which President Donald Trump asked President Lee Jae Myung whether Korean shipbuilders could quickly build 10 U.S. Navy vessels.

The requests have raised expectations for faster cooperation under the Make American Shipbuilding Great Again initiative announced at the Lee-Trump summit in October last year. South Korea committed $150 billion of its $350 billion U.S. investment package to naval and commercial shipbuilding projects.

South Korea and the United States launched the Korea-U.S. Shipbuilding Partnership Center in Washington on July 23. The center will facilitate Seoul's planned $150 billion investment in the U.S. shipbuilding sector under last year's bilateral trade deal.

U.S. President Donald Trump said Wednesday that his administration will probably look at South Korean and other companies for shipbuilding cooperation to strengthen the Navy.

South Korea and the United States signed a memorandum of understanding on Friday to strengthen bilateral shipbuilding cooperation. The deal forms part of a trade agreement under which Seoul pledged $150 billion in U.S. shipbuilding investments.

South Korea announced plans on July 1 to generate additional domestic steel demand after the European Union tightened import safeguards. Industry Minister Kim Jung-kwan led talks with local steelmakers in Seoul.

Industry Minister Kim Jung-kwan said specific investment projects in the United States can be discussed after a new law takes effect on June 18. The move aligns with last year's trade agreement committing South Korea to invest $350 billion in the US.
