Wave energy buoy tested off Basque coast

A large buoy is being tested off Spain's Basque coast to generate electricity from waves. Australian firm Carnegie Clean Energy leads the project. The technology could support Europe's energy supply.

In the Atlantic off Spain's Basque coast, a large buoy moves underwater with the waves. It is anchored by ropes to the seabed and uses the circular motion to drive a generator.

Jonathan Fiévez, CEO of Carnegie Clean Energy, says: „Wir machen aus Wellen Elektrizität.“ The installation produces power from a barely tapped renewable source.

The technology could make Europe more independent from fossil fuel imports. First, however, the industry must solve a fundamental problem.

Researchers from the University of Michigan have deployed two prototype wave energy devices on Beaver Island in Lake Michigan. The effort aims to generate electricity locally and reduce dependence on vulnerable underwater cables from the mainland.

Casimir Inc has emerged from stealth mode with significant venture capital backing to develop a device that extracts energy from the vacuum using the Casimir force. The startup claims its technology can produce continuous free energy through quantum tunneling between fixed plates and pillars. The announcement revives interest in the founders' earlier work on an electromagnetic drive.

Tesla has unveiled a new video highlighting its Autobidder platform at the Chevire battery energy storage site in Nantes, France. The project transformed the grounds of a decommissioned coal power plant into a modern battery installation. Harmony Energy partnered with Tesla on the effort, which marks the first such project for both companies in the country.

On May 1, 2026, electricity prices on the German exchange dropped to minus 499 euros per megawatt hour. High photovoltaic production met low demand on a holiday. Economy Minister Katherina Reiche plans reforms to address this.
