Werder Bremen wins north derby against HSV with 37,000 fans

Werder Bremen's women won the first north derby in Bundesliga history 2-0 against Hamburger SV. In front of 37,000 fans at the sold-out Weserstadion, ex-HSV player Larissa Mühlhaus scored both goals from penalties. The victory moves Bremen temporarily to fifth in the table.

The derby took place at the sold-out Weserstadion, drawing 37,000 spectators—a new record for a Werder women's home game. Before the match, the rivals were separated by just two points in the table, but Bremen displayed clear superiority. The Hamburg team played defensively and rarely created chances.

The first goal came in the 6th minute: Referee Riem Hussein awarded a controversial handball penalty against Svea Stoldt, whose hand was directly in front of her body. Without VAR, the error stood. Larissa Mühlhaus, 22 years old and transferred from HSV to Werder in summer 2024, converted confidently but refrained from celebrating. Bremen dominated the first half; Maja Sternad missed a chance in the 17th minute and received a yellow card after fouling HSV goalkeeper Larissa Haidner. Haidner saved a shot from Verena Wieder just before halftime (39.).

After the break, Mária Mikolajová hit the post (47.), and Mühlhaus' assist led to another Sternad shot off the woodwork (48.). The second penalty was justified: In the 56th minute, Leni Eggert's hand blocked a cross from Michelle Weiß. Mühlhaus scored again. HSV now sits in tenth place, Bremen in fifth.
