Young Washington leads quiet indie film openings this weekend

Angel Studios' Young Washington is set to open in theaters on July 4 on 2,700 screens. The PG-13 film joins limited rereleases of classic titles during a subdued July 4 weekend for new indie releases.

The movie stars William Franklyn-Miller as a young George Washington. It is directed by Jon Erwin and features Mary-Louise Parker as Washington's mother, Ben Kingsley as Virginia Gov. Robert Dinwiddie, and Kelsey Grammer as Lord Fairfax.

The story is set in the 1750s and follows Washington as a British officer leading a campaign against the French in Ohio. The film is timed to the 250th anniversary of the founding of the U.S.

Elsewhere, a 4K restoration of Sherman's March opens July 3 at Film Forum in New York. Kino Lorber releases the documentary Mary Oliver: Saved By the Beauty of the World at the IFC Center on July 3. Citizen Kane returns to about 900 theaters on July 5 and July 8 via Fathom Entertainment.
