A young woman around 25 years old was shot dead on Wednesday evening in her vehicle in Nice, Alpes-Maritimes. A six-month-old baby in the car was unharmed. The shooter fled on a scooter found abandoned near the train station.
The incident occurred around 6 PM on avenue Henri-Matisse in the west of the city. The victim, believed to be of Cape Verdean nationality, was found in cardio-respiratory arrest. Firefighters attempted to resuscitate her, but to no avail.
According to initial investigation details, the shooter fled on a two-wheeler. The scooter, lacking license plates, was discovered in a nearby street close to the train station. Police are actively searching for the gunman, and the public prosecutor attended the scene.
A suspect, likely the owner of the scooter, has been arrested. It remains unclear if he is the shooter. The victim's vehicle showed multiple bullet impacts.
Nice's mayor, Christian Estrosi (Horizons), shared on X his 'immense emotion and deep anger after the death of a young woman targeted by gunfire while with her baby, fortunately safe and sound.' Local deputy Éric Ciotti (UDR) described it as an 'absolute drama,' noting the baby was 'miraculously unharmed.' He added: 'Nice must not become Marseille under any circumstances.'
Authorities are investigating the circumstances of this shooting, which raises concerns about security in the area.
