Zacatecas government agrees with producers and frees Plaza de Armas

The Zacatecas state government reached an agreement with bean producers protesting in Plaza de Armas, allowing the removal of agricultural machinery and freeing the space for the Festival Cultural Zacatecas 2026 inauguration. General Government Secretary Rodrigo Reyes Mugüerza highlighted both parties' willingness. A dialogue table with federal authorities will be set up this Sunday.

Rodrigo Reyes Mugüerza said the agreement was possible due to the sensitivity of producers and government, as well as Governor David Monreal Ávila's efforts during the recent visit by Mexico's president.

Under the deal, a dialogue table with federal Food for Well-Being authorities starts this Sunday. It will address issues like collecting 1,500 tons of beans from about 300 producers, seeking certainty in marketing their harvest.

"The state government's commitment is to keep pressing for the Federation to actively join these tables and respond to the legitimate demands of Zacatecas farmers," Reyes Mugüerza emphasized.

Producer representatives voiced willingness for dialogue and civility in their protest. "We come in peace, we are hardworking people. Our demand is fair and addresses a real need. We trust dialogue will yield agreements benefiting all parties," they stated. They removed machinery to allow the festival to proceed.

Corn producers in Michoacán, Guanajuato, and Jalisco announced the release of one lane in their road blockades as a gesture of good faith to speed up negotiations with the federal government. This follows dialogue commitments with senators, though they reject the offered price of 6,050 pesos per ton and demand 7,200 pesos. The blockades, started on October 27, have left hundreds stranded for over 20 hours.

Mexico's Interior Ministry (Segob) called for dialogue with truckers and agricultural producers threatening nationwide blockades next Monday after Easter Week 2026. The federal agency stated it addresses their demands through permanent working groups. It highlighted progress on road safety, incentives, and commercialization.

Mexico's Senate began urgent debate on Thursday on the new General Water Law, approved hours earlier by the Chamber of Deputies without going through committees. In Peru's Sacred Valley of Cusco, Quechua farmers like Ruth Flores advance agroecological production to support their families, yet face barriers in accessing markets and fair prices. Through the Provincial Association of Agroecological Producers of Calca (Appac), they demand municipal aid for transport, storage, and healthy eating campaigns. Experts emphasize the need for state investment to tackle rural poverty and foster sustainable development.

The Chamber of Deputies approved the reform to the National Waters Law in general with 328 votes in favor, despite protests from farmers who blocked highways and demanded dialogue. The initiative, pushed by President Claudia Sheinbaum, prioritizes the human right to water and bans its hoarding, with penalties of up to eight years in prison for water crimes. The Senate is set to vote on it this Thursday.
