ZephyrIoT reaches orbit for the second time

ZephyrIoT has reached orbit for the second time. Antmicro and Aethero flew the open source real-time operating system on a CubeSat aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rideshare in March 2026.

The same open source RTOS used in critical embedded systems on Earth is now operating in space.

Antmicro supports Aethero next-gen space computers with Zephyr-controlled onboard computers built around NVIDIA Jetson Orin and Thor edge AI platforms.

The CubeSat launch marked the latest deployment of the technology beyond Earth's surface.

NASA's Artemis II mission lifted off successfully on April 1, 2026, from Kennedy Space Center in Florida, sending astronauts Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, Christina Koch, and Jeremy Hansen aboard the Orion spacecraft for the first crewed Moon flyby since Apollo 17. Powered by the Space Launch System (SLS) rocket, the 10-day test flight will validate critical systems for future lunar landings and Mars missions, looping around the Moon's far side.

Bavarian space company Isar Aerospace cancelled its latest test flight attempt of the Spectrum carrier rocket from Norway's Andøya spaceport on Thursday, suspecting a leak in a pressure container. This follows an abort on March 25 due to a safety issue. CEO Daniel Metzler promised another attempt soon.

NASA's Artemis II mission, the first crewed flight beyond Earth orbit in over 50 years, launches today carrying Argentina's ATENEA satellite aboard the Orion spacecraft. ATENEA, a 12U CubeSat fully developed in Argentina, is the only Latin American participant selected from over 50 countries' proposals. The mission will test key systems en route to lunar orbit.

NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman told lawmakers that SpaceX and Blue Origin expect their lunar landers to be ready for the Artemis III mission in late 2027. The mission will now test the landers in Earth orbit rather than attempting a lunar landing. This change aims to reduce risks and increase launch frequency.

Following their successful launch, NASA's Artemis II astronauts aboard the Orion spacecraft resolved a jammed toilet fan and Microsoft Outlook software glitches during the initial phase of their 10-day lunar orbit mission. The crew—Commander Reid Wiseman, Pilot Victor Glover, Mission Specialists Jeremy Hansen and Christina Koch—marks historic firsts: Glover as the first Black astronaut, Koch the first woman, and Hansen the first Canadian to venture toward the moon.
