People who lose weight using GLP-1 medications such as Ozempic and Wegovy may be judged more negatively than those who lose weight through diet and exercise — and even more negatively than people who do not lose weight at all — according to a new study led by Rice University psychologist Erin Standen.
A new analysis of clinical trials indicates that semaglutide, the active ingredient in Ozempic and Wegovy, helps older adults with obesity lose substantial weight and improve heart health markers. The findings come from data on participants aged 65 and above who received the once-weekly medication alongside lifestyle changes.

An international meta-analysis slated for presentation at the European Congress on Obesity (ECO 2026) in Istanbul, Turkey (May 12–15) suggests that people who increase their walking to roughly 8,500 steps a day during a weight-loss program and sustain similar levels afterward may be less likely to regain weight.
An Italian research team comparing standard BMI categories with dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) body-fat measurements found that more than one-third of adults were placed in the wrong weight category, and that BMI slightly overestimated the combined prevalence of overweight and obesity in the sample.

New research shows that visceral fat around the waist increases heart failure risk more than BMI, even among those with normal weight. Inflammation mediates much of this link. The findings were presented at the American Heart Association's EPI|Lifestyle Scientific Sessions 2026 in Boston.
