Audible launches read and listen feature for synced audiobooks

Audible has introduced a new Read and Listen feature that allows users to read and listen to books simultaneously. The tool syncs text highlighting with audio narration for those with both Audible and Kindle subscriptions. It aims to enhance engagement and accessibility for various readers.

Audible, owned by Amazon, announced the Read and Listen feature on Wednesday, adding it to its app for the first time. Previously available in the Kindle app as part of its Voice experience, the feature now extends to Audible's library. Users who own both the audiobook and ebook versions of a title can read along as the audio plays, with the text highlighted in real-time, similar to karaoke lyrics.

An Audible spokesperson told CNET, "Our data shows that customers who currently listen while reading along are among Audible's most engaged users, consuming nearly twice as much content per month as audiobook-only customers." The company hopes this flexibility will help readers connect with books more deeply and improve accessibility for individuals with dyslexia, low vision, ADHD, and similar conditions. Some research indicates that combining reading and listening can boost comprehension and retention.

The library includes books in English, Spanish, and French. Owners of ebooks receive discounted audiobooks. Andy Tsao, chief product officer at Audible, stated, "Read and Listen gives book lovers the best of both worlds," noting its potential for language learning or studying.

The feature is now available on the Audible app in the US, with rollout planned later this year in the UK, Australia, and Germany. A TechRadar article described it as a handy and accessible tool but highlighted a catch that feels back-handed for book lovers, with the author expressing preference for physical books.
