Bloggers in Murang'a targeted by security officials over posts

Tension has risen in Murang'a County after the County Security and Intelligence Committee launched an operation to pursue bloggers accused of posting baseless information online.

Murang'a Police Commander Cleti Kimaiyo said some bloggers have been summoned to explain their claims and will be pursued if they refuse. Senator Joe Nyutu strongly criticized the move as a plot to silence government critics. High Court lawyer James Muna said many posts are political rather than criminal and advised bloggers to ignore police summons. Among those affected is 28-year-old Mixson Warui who refused to report to county headquarters. Youth and Sports Officer Manoah Gachucha cited threats against online activists lasting about 19 months, referencing the January 2025 death of Dennis Mwangi. Security officials maintain the operation targets false information that could endanger public safety.
