Christian Garin defeated Juan Manuel Cerúndolo 7-6(2) and 7-5 in the first round of the Rome Masters 1000. The Chilean displayed high-level play and stood out for a spectacular point that secured the opening set.

The Chilean player, ranked 104th, defeated Argentine Juan Manuel Cerúndolo (72nd) in a match played on May 7. Garin regained form after three straight wins in the tournament, including qualifying rounds.

The first set went to a tie-break that Garin won 7-2 after a remarkable point where he covered the court from side to side. Tennis TV described it as: “71% of the Earth is covered by water, Cristian Garin covered the rest in this point”.

In the second set, Garin led 4-1 before Cerúndolo leveled the score. The Chilean secured the decisive break in the twelfth game. He will next face Spain’s Alejandro Davidovich Fokina (23rd) for a spot in the third round.
