A fire at a bed-and-breakfast in Malviya Nagar killed 21 people on June 3. Chief Minister Rekha Gupta announced compensation the next day.
The blaze broke out around 8:30 a.m. at Flourish Stay B&B in Hauz Rani, South Delhi. Among the dead was Shrutika Baranwal, a 25-year-old TISS postgraduate from Bokaro who had travelled to Delhi for a new job induction. Head constables Dinesh Yadav, Kartar Yadav and others reached the scene in casual clothes and rescued several guests, including two Nigerian women and a Kazakh couple. Yadav said he broke a bathroom window with his bare hands and carried an elderly woman to safety. On June 4, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta visited injured victims at Max Hospital and announced ₹10 lakh for families of the deceased and ₹5 lakh for those seriously injured. She directed officials to arrange dignified transport of remains and scheduled a meeting on June 5 to address illegal constructions and fire safety violations. The Aam Aadmi Party questioned the Delhi Fire Services response time, alleging the call was received earlier than the 8:50 a.m. reported by officials. The BJP countered that previous governments had neglected the fire service.
