Former NFL general manager Doug Whaley said this week that Pittsburgh Steelers cornerback Joey Porter Jr. is unlikely to improve his ability to intercept passes. Whaley described the skill as something Porter never developed at Penn State or in the pros.
Whaley made the comments on 93.7 The Fan. He pointed to both hands and ball skills as limiting factors.
"He just never had it. Didn’t have it at Penn State. Hasn’t had it as a pro. So right now, I think what you see is what you get with him," Whaley said.
Porter recorded one interception over four college seasons at Penn State and three in three NFL seasons. He has defended 31 passes in the league.
The remarks come as Porter, who turns 26 soon, prepares for contract talks. Whaley suggested the Steelers may use the interception numbers to negotiate a lower deal.
