Pittsburgh Steelers cornerback Joey Porter Jr. is participating in mandatory minicamp but holding in from full practice as he seeks a contract extension. The move comes as he enters the final year of his rookie deal. Porter also shared details on how the new defensive staff plans to use the secondary.
Porter said he wants to be on the field with his teammates during the sessions. “I wanna be out there. Everybody knows I want to be out there. I’m just doing everything I can and taking it day by day,” he said via 93.7 The Fan. He added that he feels he has earned elite status among NFL corners and is receiving the respect he believes is due. On the defensive side, Porter confirmed the staff will allow corners to travel with top receivers rather than confining them to one side of the field. He noted the approach is similar to what the unit has done before. Porter became the team’s clear CB1 after Jalen Ramsey shifted to a full-time safety role. In three seasons, he has not allowed a touchdown to any receiver he has covered.
