Driver shot in Maipú carjacking after resisting robbery

A violent armed carjacking left a driver wounded by a gunshot to the leg on Sunday afternoon in Maipú, Metropolitan Region. The attack happened while the victim waited at a traffic light, and the assailant fled after shooting. The victim was taken to a hospital and is out of vital danger.

On Sunday afternoon, around 8:10 p.m., an armed carjacking occurred at the intersection of Avenidas Segunda Transversal and Central Gonzalo Pérez Llona in Maipú, south of the Metropolitan Region. According to Captain Ignacio Gatica, duty officer of the Rinconada Prefecture of Carabineros, the victim was stopped at a red light in his vehicle when an armed individual approached from the opposite direction and attempted to steal the car.

“An individual armed with a firearm descends and tries to take the vehicle from the victim,” Gatica detailed. The driver resisted the robbery, prompting the attacker to fire an undetermined number of shots. One bullet struck the victim's leg, causing a gunshot wound.

Frightened, the driver reversed his vehicle to escape the carjacking, colliding with the car behind him. “The driver gets scared, reverses to try to evade this carjacking, and collides with the rear of the vehicle ahead,” the officer explained. The collision caused only minor damage and did not significantly impact the police procedure.

Carabineros quickly transported the injured man to Hospital El Carmen, where he is receiving medical attention and remains out of vital danger. The perpetrators fled the scene. Police personnel secured the site, took statements from eyewitnesses, and informed the Public Ministry, which will determine the specialized unit to investigate the facts.
