The Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) raided an illegal petroleum-siphoning site in Nairobi's Industrial Area on Friday, seizing about 800 litres of fuel and equipment. No suspects were arrested as they fled upon tip-off. A manhunt is underway.
On Friday, EPRA's surveillance and enforcement team, in collaboration with the Energy Police Unit, raided an open-air illegal petroleum-siphoning site at Nadume Road off Lunga-Lunga Road in Nairobi County's Industrial Area.
"Today, our ever hawk-eyed surveillance & enforcement team, in collaboration with the Energy Police Unit, raided an open-air illegal petroleum-siphoning site located at Nadume road off Lunga Lunga road at Industrial area in Nairobi County," EPRA said in a statement.
Officers seized approximately 800 litres of syphoned fuel along with equipment used in the operation, including rubber pipes, drums, an aluminium container, and 20-litre jerrycans.
The suspects fled after receiving a tip-off from informers, evading arrest. "The site has been secured as the hunt for the culprits intensifies," EPRA stated. The location is near Kenya Pipeline Company (KPC) storage facilities, a key node for fuel distribution in Nairobi and East Africa.
The bust comes amid an ongoing fuel contamination saga involving substandard petrol in the market.
